Vice Provost for Integrative Learning and Life Design, Johns Hopkins University

As the founding Vice Provost for Integrative Learning and Life Design at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Farouk Dey leads a newly created division of 15 departments and centers that orchestrate programs and services to bridge curricular and experiential learning with professional ambitions and mentoring for all undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and alumni across the university’s nine schools. He launched a new vision of equitable life and career outcomes for all students regardless of background or social capital. In partnership with his team and university colleagues, he implemented life design as a core philosophy of the student experience, scaled alumni mentoring and corporate engagement, raised funding to support students’ immersive experiences, opened the Imagine Center for Integrative Learning and Life Design, and achieved record growth in student, alumni, and employer engagement, satisfaction, and outcomes.

Dr. Dey holds a Ph.D. and an EdS in Educational Leadership, an MBA, an MEd in Counseling Psychology, and a BBA in Finance. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins University, he served as the Dean of Career and Experiential Education and Associate Vice Provost at Stanford University, Director of Career and Professional Development at Carnegie Mellon University, board member at the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), and commission chair at the American College Personnel Association (ACPA).

Named one of LinkedIn’s Top Ten Voices in Education and recipient of several national and university awards, Dr. Dey is recognized for his writings, talks, and transformational leadership in career and life design and workforce development. He has consulted for many organizations and universities, served as guest faculty at several institutes, taught courses in leadership and life design, and delivered keynote addresses at dozens of conferences in the US and around the world. Most notably, he led a four-year USAID initiative to build career education centers at universities throughout the Philippines and taught courses for the Ministry of Education in Singapore. As illustrated in his TEDx Talk “Life Purpose Reconsidered” and Vision Chats podcast, the central theme of his work has consistently been optimizing life and career outcomes for all learners regardless of background or social capital.
